How do I rename the DRM folder to get activation to work?

Introduction
KeyStone courseware uses Microsoft’s Digital Rights Management (DRM) technology. Encrypted files containing information about which files are DRM-protected are stored within your local “DRM” folder. Behind-the-scenes, through DRM, your computer is tracking which media files you own the rights to use. It’s this technology that eliminates your need to activate your courseware each time you launch one of the courses.

Before going further, note that if you use any other media that employs DRM technology, the rights in the DRM directory will be lost if you delete the DRM directory. Affected media files (those employing Microsoft’s Digital Rights Management (DRM) technology) will not play unless the proper rights are encoded into the files in the DRM directory.

Resolution
Occasionally, you may need to rename the DRM folder in order to your courseware activation to work.

Please note that the following instructions will eliminate any activations you may have on your computer for any software using Microsoft’s Digital Rights Management (not just KeyStone courseware). KeyStone Learning Systems is not responsible for any software not functioning after using this method.

You must be an administrator on your PC to complete these steps.

  1. Find the directory C:/Documents and Settings/All users/DRM/. (Hint: If you do not see the DRM directory in the All Users directory, please select Folder Options in the Tools menu, select the View tab, and uncheck “Hide protected operating system files (Recommended).”
  2. Rename the DRM directory to “DRM2” by right-clicking the DRM folder and choosing Rename from the Shortcut menu. (Hint: KeyStone recommends renaming your current DRM folder per the instructions below so that the contents of the original DRM folder are still available.)
  3. Double-click the KS icon on your desktop (hint: make sure the course DVD-ROM is in your DVD-ROM drive)
  4. Choose License: Activate License from the course menu
  5. Click the link to go to the KeyStone activation web page
  6. When prompted, enter your activation key (located on a sticker inside your DVD-ROM case)
  1. Click Submit
