In Word 2007, you can have several documents open at one time. Each document is individually represented by a button on your Windows Task Bar at the bottom of your screen. Files can be opened either from the Open Dialog box or from the Most Recently Used File List.

From the Open Dialog Box, you can access to all of the files currently saved on your computer. But, from the Most Recently Used File List, you only have access to up to 50 of the most recent files you’ve worked with in Word (although, the default number for this option is 17 documents).
Opening Files from the Most Recently Used File List
- Click the Office Menu icon
- Under Recent Documents, click the file you want to open
Opening Files from the Open Dialog Box
- Click the Office Menu Icon
- Choose Open
- Navigate to the folder that contains your file
- Select your file
- Click Open
