PowerPoint 2003: Working with Indents & Line Spacing

Since we discuss bullets and numbering in the last lesson, this seems like a good place to talk about more paragraph formatting options – Indents & Line Spacing.

Line Spacing

You’ve probably heard of single spacing and double spacing. Well, that’s what PowerPoint calls “Line Spacing.” And, you actually have a few additional options, as well.

Customizing Line Spacing

  1. Select the paragraphs you want to change

  2.
  3. Choose Format: Line Spacing from the Menu bar

Paragraph Spacing

With Paragraph Spacing, you can set additional space either above or below a selected paragraph.

Extra 12 pts

For instance, the text you are reading now is actually single-spaced with an added 12 pts of space added AFTER each paragraph.

You can see how, when the text jumps paragraph to paragraph, extra space is added to separate the paragraphs. However, when the current paragraph wraps line by line, the paragraph lines are separated by a single space.

Changing the Spacing Before or After Paragraphs

  1. Select the paragraphs you want to change

  2.
  3. Choose Format: Line Spacing from the Menu bar

  4.
  5. Set the space in the Before and After boxes under Spacing

  6.
  7. Click OK

Indents

Whether you know it or not, you create and work with indents every time you create a bulleted or numbered list.

Looking at the ruler bar, you can see small triangles and one rectangle at the left and right margins.
