Excel 2007: Rename & Move Workbook Tabs

Each worksheet tab in a workbook contains a non-descript name like Sheet1, Sheet2 or Sheet3, by default. This is probably fine for workbooks that only have data on one sheet. But, once you start to store data on multiple worksheets in a workbook, being able to give each tab a unique name really comes in handy. And, it’s also helpful to be able to reorder those tabs.

Renaming Worksheet Tabs

While renaming worksheet tabs is a relatively simple process, you should know some of the naming guidelines (much like you need to know naming guidelines when saving a file).

Naming Guidelines
     
  • Worksheet tab names can contain up to 32 characters
     
  •  
  • Worksheet tab names cannot contain certain characters such as / and *
     

Renaming a Worksheet Tab Using the Ribbon

     
  1. Display the worksheet that you want to rename
     
  2.  
  3.  Click Format in the Cells group on the Home tab
     
  4.  
  5. Choose Rename Sheet from the drop-down list
     
  6.  
  7. Type the new worksheet tab name
     
  8.  
  9. Press [Enter]
     

Renaming a Worksheet Tab Using the Shortcut Menu

     
  1. Right-click the worksheet tab you want to rename
     
  2.  
  3. Choose Rename from the shortcut list
     
  4.  
  5. Type the new worksheet tab name
     
  6.  
  7. Press [Enter]
     

Quickly Renaming a Worksheet Tab

     
  1. Double-click the worksheet tab you want to rename
     
  2.  
  3. Type the new worksheet tab name
     
  4.  
  5. Press [Enter]
     

Moving Workbook Tabs

Once you’ve renamed your worksheet tabs, moving them can be just as important. You may find after a while that you use one worksheet more than another and that having it be in the first position might actually be more helpful to you. Luckily, moving a worksheet tab is actually even easier than renaming one.

Moving a Worksheet Tab Using the Ribbon

     
  1. Select the worksheet you want to move
     
  2.  
  3. Click Format in the Cells group on the Home tab
     
  4.  
  5. Choose Move or Copy… from the drop-down list

    4.       Select a new worksheet location

    5.       Click OK

  1. Right-click the worksheet tab you want to move
     
  2.  
  3. Choose Move or Copy… from the shortcut list

  5. Select a new worksheet location
     
  6.  
  7. Click OK
