Excel 2007: Importing Data to Excel

Excel 2007: Importing Data to Excel

Let’s start with the art of Importing – or, getting data stored in other places into Excel for analysis. One of the main benefits to importing is you can maintain a connection to the original data source. This means, when the original source updates, your Excel spreadsheet will update, too.

 Importing from Microsoft Access

  1.  Click the From Access command in the Get External Data group on the Data tab

  2.
  3. Navigate to the folder that contains your Access database

  4.
  5. Select the Access database and click Open

Importing from a Text File

There are two text files types you can import into Excel: .txt and .csv. A .txt file is a delimited text file that typically has the columns of data separated with the TAB character. A .csv file simply indicates a file in which the columns of data are separated by commas, hence the name: comma separated values.
