Excel 2007: Grouping & Outlining Data

With Grouping & Outline, Excel can read your list and create levels of summary. This means, you can easily hide and display groups of your data. But, if your worksheet doesn’t contain formulas and summary data, you’ll need to define the groups for Excel. By the very nature of grouping data, Excel creates outline levels.

Grouping Data

     
  1. Select the range you want to group
     
  2.  
  3. Click the Group command in the Outline group on the Data tab
     
  4.  
  5. Click Group…
     
  6.  
  7. Choose whether you are grouping by Rows or Columns
     
  8.  
  9. Click OK

Ungrouping Data

     
  1. Select the range you want to ungroup
     
  2.  
  3. Click the Ungroup command in the Outline group on the Data tab
     
  4.  
  5. Click Ungroup…
     
  6.  
  7. Choose whether you are ungrouping by Rows or Columns
     
  8.  
  9. Click OK
