Excel 2003: Merging & Splitting Cells

Excel 2003: Merging & Splitting Cells

You’ve probably seen titles or headings centered across a group of columns. This is done by using the Merge and Center button on the Home tab. The act of unmerging cells is simply called “splitting.”

Merging Cells

  1. Select the cells you’d like to merge

  2.
  3. Click Merge and Center on the Formatting toolbar

Splitting Cells

  1. Select the cells you want to split back to their original form

  2.
  3. Click Merge and Center on the Formatting toolbar

To Merge cells using the Menu bar, you’ll have to open the Format Cells Dialog box, shown below. Simply select the cells you want to merge, then choose Format: Cells from the Menu bar. Once you see the Format Cells Dialog box, click the Alignment tab and enable the checkbox next to Merge cells, and then click OK.
